Who Am I? Part 2—Your Personal Style Archetype
Episode #2 of the course Lazy person’s guide to a perfect wardrobe by Andrea Pflaumer
Understanding your style (personal expression through clothes) makes your wardrobe choices easier. Similar to how unique coloring is determined, our personal style is expressed in multiple archetypes. The history of these archetypes was described in the early 1900s by Belle Northrup at Columbia Teacher’s School, defining a series of personalities based on yin and yang’s Tao principles, and the silence and softness qualities of yyn and yang’s dynamism and power.
In the mid-century, two textile and design professors, Grace Margaret Morton and Harriet Tilden McJimsey, developed the concept, each developing a complete repertoire of a style and color archetypes. The last gem in this crown was added by John Styleer, Manager of Personal Style Consultants. Their combinations encoded seven styles of archetypes, covering each personality, body shape, and imaginable colors.
There are three mostly yang archetypes, three mostly yin and one that balances both. By understanding where you fit these archetypes, you will learn about the best clothing silhouettes, textiles and patterns that flatten your body. As with color archetypes, the principles apply equally to men and women.
We will start with the most yang archetype: “Dramatic” individuals have more intensity on their facial features. They also tend to be taller. Their style is not subtle or “cute”. Combined with a somewhat theatrical persona, it means they lean towards the avant garde. Clothes with more volume, trimmings and even shine for them.
Dramatic women: Gal Gadot, Cher, Idina Menzel
Dramatic men: Russell Brand, Johnny Depp, Giant Patel
The next archetype is called “Natural”. If you are a really lazy fashion lover, there is probably a lot in this style because these types are generally comfortable; they do not make much effort to stay fashionable. Instead of comfortable, natural fabrics, hugging styles, body slip, loose knits and ethnic motifs speak to them.
