Bathroom Design Trends 2020

Home design and decor trends seem to follow some “macro trends” that stem from the way we live and work. You may have noticed that minimalism has been a consistent trend in design over the past few years. As our lives become more complex, we try to be more comfortable and simple, less messy and hectic to our home spaces.

Take a look at the two macro trends that drive today’s bathroom design.

Macro-Trend #1: Wellness is on our Minds

As our lives become more stressful, people in our society seem to focus more on the important things in life. It is important for family and friends to enjoy and to have meaningful experiences instead of collecting too much. We all want our homes to reflect these values and be a place to recharge them. A well-designed bathroom is an absolutely great place to charge and prepare for a hectic day.

It has been an important trend for real estate and new construction as well as the health, kitchen and bathroom industry. Neighborhoods with wellness features are demanded by fitness-focused Millenniums, health-conscious Boomers and the rising, sustainability-oriented Generation Z.

Micro-Trend:  Zen is In!

Today, homeowners value spa-inspired bathrooms. You may have heard that the term “self-care” is more often expressed. One day in the spa is something we want all of us to have at home. Visit any model house and you will see features such as rain shower heads, independent bathtubs and special body sprays in the shower.

minimalist bathroom

In addition to the need for Zen in a complex world, bathroom styles become more fluid by hiding hardware and pipes for a cleaner look. The lines are simple, the materials are less fussy.

If you haven’t had a chance to get one of these trendy bowl-shaped sinks, many designers think they’re out of style. People prefer unassembled sinks. Pedestal sinks and leg sinks are becoming popular.

It looks like a jacuzzi, jet-tubs are less popular than in the past twenty years. In a recent study by Remodeling Magazine, 69% of the tubs purchased for renovation have been shown to be wetted.

.

Micro-trend: Open concept

We see vanities floating in model houses in our region. They visually add space to the bathroom. It may seem to take up some storage space compared to traditional makeup that reaches the floor. A smart storage system will solve this problem.

We see clearer concept showers. The combination of bathtub and shower is an upgrade to many models at home today. Check out this feature to become popular in the next few years.

Micro-Trend: Old Decorating Rules are Out

Modern bathroom design trends are moving towards a bathroom that is compatible with the decor in the rest of the house. The combination of colors, architectural designs, luxury and comfort is more personal and individual.

The good news is that you can create a spa-like relaxing bath to suit your own decorating tastes. Today’s homeowners demand more style options, more elegance and more options in lighting and luminaires.

Personal style reigns in the bathroom. Most of the old rules came out, so go ahead and hang a chandelier over the tub. Elegant touch enhances the feeling of luxury. We also see artwork in the bathroom … there may be something you need to take a look at while doing luxury in your own home spa!

A warning for home sellers: As with any room in your home, avoid too much personalization in the bathroom. Don’t let buyers work too hard to ignore your personal preferences while on the way to bidding at home!

Micro-Trend: Natural Elements

Natural and organic materials such as natural stone, concrete, wood and wood veneers are gaining popularity. Wood panels reminiscent of the 70’s sauna, but in an updated version, make a quiet comeback. Trending with the rest of the house, designers bring wicker, basket and natural materials to the bathroom to enhance the spa-like feel.

Nature-oriented baths are becoming very popular and appearances are easy to reach. You don’t need to add a vertical plant wall to your bathroom to create a biophilic environment in the bathroom (though it’s great!). Most of us do not have room or light to successfully remove our bathrooms. There are a few easy additions you can do to bring nature:

Add potted plants to your bathroom, even if there is a plant in a window. Plants not only add visual beauty, but also cleans the air. According to Spruce, the 19 best house plants for your bathroom, these Eight plants are the best:

  • Aloe Vera – bonus: good for sunburn and boo-boo.
    bromeliads
    cyclamen
    Bamboo – it’s easy!
    Stupid Cane
Snake Plant – can fill a wide area
Spider Plants – can be easily hung if you don’t have a window sill
Orchid – this adds exotic touch! If your bathroom doesn’t have space or light for live plants, you can add pictures or wallpaper to touch the plant life. Like many rooms in the house, idiom walls are becoming popular in the bathroom. If you have such a wall, a plant-inspired wallpaper or some artwork would be dramatic and beautiful.

Add wicker or wood products to the bathroom. Wood grain accessories, including bamboo, have many options. The concrete / wood combination is now very trendy.

Natural stone looks amazing in the bathroom. Even a pebble in the shower is a great touch. If you’re renovating a bathroom, consider the stone countertop. Marble is a classic, although expensive, it always looks gorgeous in style and right in the bathroom.

    Industrial Decor

Due to the design trends in the main living areas of the house, the bathroom can be easily treated to industrial decor. Light fixtures, shower bars, exposed pipes and reused industrial parts are at home in the bathroom. Various metals can be easily mixed with industrial design.

Got Luxury?

We are more compatible with our experiences in our homes and how our rooms make us feel. People want to have a spa experience at home more than before. As life becomes more stressful, a relaxing retreat ability is demanded in our own bathroom. Call:

  • Spacious shower cabin with various shower heads and spray systems. Multi-shower showers are the essence of luxury in a large shower. Doorless and empty showers are very hot. As mentioned earlier, it is perfect for the elderly.
  • More often, people prefer to get out of the tub. More independent bathtubs are purchased to save space. In the past, standalone bathtubs were very expensive designer features, but prices dropped as demand increased. I hope this will be true for these amazing bathroom features.
  • Thermostatic showers have become more popular, and more and more steam showers have been added to bathroom renovations.
  • For many years steam showers have been reported to have many health benefits. More people looking for a spa getaway at home include steam showers.
  • For new homes, we will see a fireplace in the bathroom for the ultimate luxury and comfort experience.

Macro-Trend #2: Technology is at Home in the Bathroom

The increase in smart home products over the past few years is a well-known fact. According to the 2019 USA Houzz Bathroom Trends Survey, demand for bathroom technologies has increased several years each year. In 2018, a quarter of the renovations included smart assistants, and about 1 in 5 hosts choose smart lighting options. Intelligent technology in the bathroom has passed from top to main stream.

Upgraded, high-tech faucets, LED lighting and advanced electronics are in demand, but not just for the sake of technology. Homeowners are looking for more control and convenience. You can more conveniently create a private shower experience.

Consider a Digital Shower System with smart features like warming mode, timer and a way to pause water flow. The shower heads with LED lighting are increasing.

High-tech toilets are no longer just luxury. Self-cleaning, self-smelling toilets are becoming widespread. Smart toilet features include luxury facilities such as hands-free washing. Heated seats, motion-activated seats and built-in night lights have become widespread. (There is no surprise at midnight when someone leaves the door;)

bathroom trends 2018

Heated floors are common today. In fact, it is more cost effective than most heating methods.

Secure your iPhone or MP3 player directly with your speaker equipped high-tech toilet so you can entertain yourself in the bedside table. While you may not be able to invest $ 4,000 for a Kohler Numi toilet using this technology today, start looking for competitive models that are more available and lower priced on demand.

Follow the news and weather while brushing your teeth. Television screens are integrated in medicine cabinets and make-up mirrors. Cost is still a premium: $ 2,200 to $ 2,400 price tag.

Plug your smartphone or MP3 player into your medicine cabinet so you don’t miss any calls or songs as you prepare for work or bed. The built-in jack keeps your unit charged (and away from wet benches) and connects it to the internal speaker system.

Macro-Trend #3: Efficiency and Convenience

Technology moves to efficiency and comfort. Many of the smart home features we want in the bathroom provide an efficient and useful experience for us as we prepare in the morning or relax at night. We can customize any feature today.

Remote Control and Convenience in the Bathroom

Remote control is becoming widespread in the bathroom… TV, stereo, window and window applications are easily controlled. There are smartphone apps for everything.

From $ 300 for simple controllers to $ 3,500 or more for a complete luxury setup, programmable showers let you digitally adjust your preferred water temperature, volume, and even massage settings before stepping.

To get a personalized shower experience, you will need a 120 volt power supply and a thermostatic valve and controller in addition to your standard shower head or heads. Luxury models may include a steam system, a source of wi-fi for music, multiple body spray outlets, a tank-free kettle and a secondary controller to start the system from another room.

Here are some more customization options:

steam options for showers
heated flooring and towel bars
Backlit mirrors with built-in technology, such as digital clocks and demisting
remote temperature control

Micro-Trend:  Aging Demographics Emphasize Safety in the Bathroom

It’s not just high-tech that brings an “experience” to the bathroom. As baby explosives plan to “age” on the spot, we’re seeing more master bath renovations to meet future needs.

Trends in universal design features provide comfort, convenience and safety. However, this does not mean that your bathroom should look corporate. Some universal design innovations to fit your bathroom renovation plans:

Stylish, low-profile linear grooves are ideal for creating safe, zero-threshold showers. Unlike standard round drain caps typically installed near the front end of a shower, these long, flat drains can be installed in different positions to minimize the slope of the shower base. A popular location is located on the outer edge of the shower, creating a wheelchair-friendly, curl shower.

Many bathroom renovators leave the tub for a high-end, curbless shower. More shower fixtures are offered in more coatings – including almost invisible tile-in channel models that are largely covered with a non-slip shower floor – becoming the standard for luxury spaces. Accessible features such as seats and handles are common.

The accessible bathtub is no longer limited to the high-walled, narrow-door format that has dominated the market over the past decade. New models of Kohler, such as Elevance, use rising panels, which give it a more traditional tub look with easier entry and exit. Others use standard hinged, sealed doors, but increase the door width by a few inches for better accessibility and appearance.

Touch taps are now becoming common in the bathroom. Prices have dropped significantly from their initial appearance, making it a viable option for most budgets.

Rapidly expanding porcelain, glass and ceramic tiles make it easy to find non-slip, non-slip, low-maintenance floors. Expect to see artificial wood, linen and uniquely textured looks for tiled bathroom floors and walls. The texture provides both visual effect and better grip for wet feet.

Micro-Trend:  Conservation Rules in the Bathroom

Water reserves are emphasized in many parts of the country. In turn, regional governments are implementing safeguards. As a result, it is likely that there will be new regulations that will affect your construction or rearrangement plans. Here’s what you need to pay attention to:

Environmentally friendly

Water-saving toilets are in higher demand. The siphon, which was 7 gallons ten years ago, is now 1.2 gallons. Consider the double flush version or any low-flow toilet that meets your style preferences. You’ll find them in home improvement centers, ranging from $ 100 to thousands of stores to luxury showroom models.

The WaterSense label, launched by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2006, is known as the Energy Star to encourage sanitary ware manufacturers and homeowners to save water.

Water-saving shower heads are the norm. Today’s low-flow shower heads have beautiful designs, especially rain shower models. A typical shower head is used anywhere between 5 and 8 gallons of water per minute, while a low-flow head reduces it to 2.5 gallons or less with the same amount of water pressure.

These shower heads add strong water pressure to the mix by adding air, not water. Available in every price range, from ultra-affordable standard heads to luxury rain showers.

Body sprayers are common in today’s fixtures. They save water and increase interest in a very popular private spa experience.

Modern motion sensor taps are increasingly available for homeowners. Most large bathroom faucet manufacturers have these.

Where are People Spending the Most Money in the Bathroom?

Premium features are common in toilets and showers. Among the raised toilets, one-piece toilets are increasingly common. The ease of maintenance and cleaning made this type of design very popular. These toilets fit the great spa charm, zen charm.

Double washing mechanisms are also common. Price decreased as demand increased.

As the size of our showers increases, the demand for double showers and special shower systems increases.

Usually, bathroom renovators focus on style and good lighting when they determine where their dollar goes. Smart homeowners are still emphasizing what will add to their resale value.

Bathroom Colors for 2020

These days, colors quickly disappear. Every paint company comes out with the “color of the year”… and your style is running out every new year! According to House Beautiful, for several years the overall trend has been moving towards darker and richer colors in the bathroom. The bathroom is a great place to try a new wall color. If you don’t like it, you can easily paint it again.

Black bathrooms are very fashionable this year, but be careful… get a designer to help you get it out. If you want to try new things, start with a dust room. You can make a dramatic expression in a small space with some flashy wallpapers and accessories.

The bathroom looks like a great place to play with color. As a real estate agent, my advice is to stick to neutrals in permanent parts. Changing curtains, towels, and accessories in a bathroom can be easily done without longing out the colors that can force your bathroom to be updated within a few years.

Once again, it looks like the leading option in gray color, in-wall color, floor color and cabinets. White is in second place and beige is in third place.

It is always wise to incorporate neutral colors into permanent features and embellish them with trendy colors around.

Bathroom Materials in 2020

While the style becomes more minimalist and streamlined, many bathroom designers balance clean lines with warmth, texture and furniture. The bathroom is considered as one of the “heart of the house” areas, just like the kitchen. You will find wood, fabric, art and wallpaper.

Mirrors are more than just functional, they can be in different shapes, full length and backlit in addition to the overall design. Circular mirrors are popular as well as individual makeup mirrors rather than a single large mirror. For extra comfort, we see more and more mirrors with built-in demisters.

While mixing metals is more popular in the kitchen, the bathroom is a smaller area, and renovators still choose a single metal for fixtures. Taps, shower heads, valves, door hardware, lighting fixtures, towel rods etc. It is combined in the main bathroom. Among the matching fixtures, brushed or satin nickel is the best choice (38%), then polished chrome (28%). Ultra glossy surfaces are disappearing these days for thinner matte surfaces.

Quartz countertops are new. Marble also appears in the newest designs. Granite is not as popular as in the past. Other innovative countertop materials in the kitchen are now in the bathrooms … products produced, such as bamboo, concrete and recycled glass.

bathroom trends 2020

Tile is still very popular. Vanity backsplash, shower and on the floor. Brick patterns are the most popular, followed by traditional grid patterns, and herringbone is in the top place in the list.

Herringbone patterns appear in all design magazines, but the public doesn’t really buy it. Maybe they know it will appear in a few years? People are smart, not always following designer trends.

The tile colors are many and can fit any design concept. Metro tile is also very stylish and classic. (The subway tile first appeared on the New York subway in 1904!) It complements any design or color scheme.
