A Rental Apartment Is Earthy, Minimal, Handmade

This earthy and minimal apartment is full of nuetral tones that give the whole space a natural, organic vibe. We love the hanging plants and the throw blankets in the bedroom, the handmade furniture in the living room, the curated gold and brass elements and the natural wood in the kitchen.

Name: Adrianne Herold, her fiancee (Dylan) + our cat (Scavenger)!
Location: Champaign, Illinois
Size: 1.005 square feet
Years lived: 1 year, rental

My fiancee (Dylan) and I lived in this apartment for less than a year. We actually lived here in one unit in the parking lot before, but I saw several units doing some (fake) wooden floors and asked to transfer it to someone!

Our style has improved tremendously from our last flat to this flat. Finally I feel what my style really is. Dylan is pretty easy and doesn’t care what I do with our apartment, but we put our styles together. Dylan is more rustic, industrial and woody. I am brighter, airy and minimalist. I think we’re both blending pretty well in the whole apartment.Flat for rent Earthy, Minimal, Handmade, furnished flat for rent, furnished flat prices, 2020 rental flat designs, 2020 rental flat prices, 2020 furnished rental flat prices

Every piece of furniture (not sitting), including the coffee table and console table, was built by myself! (Image credit: Adriannexo Photography)

One unique thing about our space is that about 80 percent of our furniture is handmade by myself, my father, and Dylan. Everything from our headboard to our counter height table is handmade in my family’s garage. I think the only thing that isn’t built specifically is the things we sit on. (It’s hard to make these things LOL).

Describe the style of your home in 5 words or less: Earthy, minimal, handmade.

What is your favorite room and why? I think my favorite room is our living room. The room that I focus most when it comes to design. It’s also the first room people see! When I think of my ideal aesthetics, the living room is exactly my vision. It is spacious, natural and very comfortable.

Kitchen is something I’m struggling with. I always hated oak cabinets, but we rent it … so I did my best to accept them. (Image credit: Adriannexo Photography)

If you could change something magical about your home, what would it be? Natural light. UGH. We have large windows, but this unit is surrounded by large trees standing right in front of the windows. It is beautiful and provides a lot of privacy, but the rooms feel like night. Winter is better when all the leaves fall, but the evergreen in our rear windows remains year-round.

We have something odd about the place in the kitchen, so I chose (another) custom-made countertop table and wall shelf. (Image credit: Adriannexo Photography)

What was the last purchase (or find!) For your home? I think the last thing I bought was the bench we put under the window in the living room. We also got our new Christmas tree, so after reorganizing we needed something to fill the extra space!

Do you have any recommendations for creating a house you love? I remained true to a very solid color palette. The swatches have been saved on my phone and when I see something I like, make sure that they are in these colors first! Also, I think it’s important to clean and organize everything regularly. Make sure you can’t see, clean, free up space and never get messy!
