Have you ever looked at a beautiful crochet lace project and are you afraid? Have you ever felt you couldn’t be good enough to make lace?
If you are, I am here to say that you can make lace. Trust me. If you can make basic stitches (chains and double crochet), you can lace. Many people think that only experienced crochet machines can make lace. However, making crochet lace is really easy! Don’t you believe me? Read on to learn about four types of crochet lace for beginners!
Crochet lace is probably my favorite thing. There are so many variations and they are all very nice! When I was asked to write a guest blog post for Janne from Joy of Motion Crochet, I knew I wanted to do it instantly in lace. As I said earlier, crochet lace is perfect for beginners. Most types are made from simple stitches such as double crochet and chain.
If you’re completely new to lace, check out my guest blog post about Joy of Motion Crochet, How to Make and Design Crochet Lace. There, I will give some more information about lace.#How to Easily Crochet Lace Stitch, #How do you do a simple lace stitch in crochet?, #How do you lace crochet?, #How do you crochet a diamond lace stitch?, #How do you make lace patterns?, #Can you crochet lace?, #How do you crochet for beginners?, #What is a crochet stitch?, #What is sk stitch in crochet?, #How do you crochet lace yarn?, #What is the easiest crochet stitch?, #What is the best crochet stitch for a blanket?, #Does using a bigger crochet hook use less yarn?
If you are already familiar with lace, this post is for you too, because I also give you some tips to learn how to design your own crochet lace. Janne has an amazing site and I would love to check it out!
CROCHET LACE FOR BEGINNERS
In this article, I want to show the stitch patterns of the color samples I made in the How to Make and Design Crochet Lace section. As I said before, making them is very easy. If you practice making these swatches, it should give you a big touch on the lace. Then you can start applying your new information by trying the lace pattern!
SPECIAL NOTE: If you want to try your new lace skills with a real pattern, I will send you an ad-free PDF lace pattern when you subscribe to my mailing list by completing the form here. Indicate that you want your free pattern in the message box!
MATERIALS:
I used the same materials for all four swatches:
Knitting Picks Walking Sock Yarn
F (3.75mm) crochet hook
Blocking Materials
NOTES:
You can easily use ANY thread for these swatches. However, if you are looking for a finger thread at a good price, we definitely recommend Knit Picks Stroll. It is soft, blocks well and comes in a variety of colors.
Regarding blocking: I would definitely recommend it, though not necessary. If you don’t know how to block it, learn how. You won’t regret it, trust me! Blocking is one of the most valuable techniques you can learn.
About swatches: I will tell you to start each one using the basic single crochet. This is my choice and I recommend using this stitch. However, it is not necessary; If you want, you can start with a chainstitch. Follow the instructions on how many chains you will need and make a single crochet row above the chains.
SWATCH # 1: BASIC SHELLS
Now lace! This swatch is almost that easy! Shells are simply made using double crochet stitches. It’s not very scary, is it?
INSTRUCTIONS:
Multiples of Fsc 3 (click here for a tutorial about it! Or if you prefer to start with a chain, fold 3 + 1 and then a row of single crochet).
Line 1: Part 3 (counted as dc here and along), dc in the next fsc. * Sk 2 fsc, 3 dc in the next fsc. Repeat from * to 4 sts. Sk 2 fsc, dc in the last two fsc. Translation.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in the next dc. Sk next dc, next dc 3 dc. (Sk next 2 dc, next dc 3 dc) until 3 sts fade. Sk next dc, dc last 2 dc. Translation.
Repeat line 2 until the swatch reaches the desired length (I made 9 lines in the swatch below). As I said before, you can easily make it a scarf by repeating line 1 until the piece is long.
Do you believe me now? This crochet lace is for beginners! Anyone who can crochet can do this.

SWATCH # 2: V SHELLS

Fold 3 of the Fsc (to start with a chain stitch you will need 3 + 1 and then a single row of crochet).

Repeat Line 2 until the swatch reaches the desired length (I made 9 lines in my swatch).
SWATCH # 3: TWISTED STITCHES
I absolutely love the look of twisted stitches. For one thing, they look like similar types of knitting. It’s also really fun to do. When you hang them, you easily get a great rhythm.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Multiples of Fsc 2 (to start with a chain stitch, you will need 2 + 1 and then a single row of crochet).
Line 1: Section 4, tr in the next fsc. * Sk next fsc, tr next fsc. The work done behind tr, tr skipped st (twisted st). Repeat from * to 2 sts. In the last 2 s, Tr.
Row 2: Section 4, next tr. * Sk next tr, next tr tr. St just work done behind, skipped st tr (made of twisted st). Repeat from * to 2 sts. In the last 2 s, Tr.
Repeat line 2 until the swatch reaches the desired length (I made 6 lines in the swatch).

Pineapple from all lace is a classic that I will never tire of. I like to include my pineapples in my designs. Although it may seem complicated, don’t let it scare you. Pineapple is made from basic stitches.
