New Year, Same Closet? 5 Wardrobe Challenges to Combat in 2018

This year I am completely about to make New Decisions beyond the usual stereotypical suspects. I know I encourage all of you to upgrade your beauty regime as you continue to move to 2018, but now I’m taking you from your bathroom to your closet.

I understand that shopping less or adding more basic pieces to your wardrobe, volunteering more, or reaching this extra yoga class every week can be a few notches. However, as we enter a new year, I strongly believe that we should do our best to be the best version of ourselves … So we should not neglect our cabinets.

I recently helped a girlfriend pass through her as part of her “new year, new me” strategy. I helped define a few shopping and style tweaks to do in 2018. We have decided that it makes more sense to call them “difficulties” rather than “decisions”, because let’s face, forces and no one is perfect – even half meet. Your goal can make all the difference.

I am aware that what I want to say may sound like a cow, but one of the nights I expect most in January is when I want pure and absolute privacy from my husband. I crank my Sonos, I crush some Thai pack in my underwear and go to HAM in my closet.

** Disclaimer: Before going any further, I think I owe you transparency. I am not a perfect customer. Like everyone else, I buy things I don’t need, I can let a psychologically irresistible sale do the best, and sometimes I can accumulate clothes. **

While I consider myself a work in progress, I continually encourage myself to create new ideas on how to improve my style every year, perfecting that goal’s smart, capsule wardrobe, becoming more organized or saving. a little extra money.

Ahead, I compiled a list of tried and true New Year style challenges worth adding to your 2018 list. Enjoy!

1. Resist The Lure of a Sale

Clearance sales, flash sales, friends and family sales… yes, definitely January. If there’s something I’ve learned over the years, there’s a big difference between waiting for something you really want to go on sale and buying something, just because it’s on sale. We were all there. There was something really surprising about the item, but there was also something not right about it, but you already bought it because it’s on sale. Now he sits in the closet, collecting dust. A story as old as time.

When it comes to saying “no” to an attractive sale, I am definitely a WIP as in my ADD impulsiveness. On the situation: earlier this week I noticed that Levi had a BOGO50 on jeans.

“Oh my God! You need completely new jeans and now you can get two pairs! You basically save money instead of spending! Do it, Madeline!” Says, “the devil (shopping) who tends to appear on my shoulder from time to time. Did I really need new jeans?” No (and I’m sure hell doesn’t need two couples, of course) because I didn’t even think of new jeans until I saw the eye-catching BOGO50 email.

While some sales are really worth it – seriously, is there any better feeling than the one piece you’ve been observing for weeks suddenly drops 30%? Even available in your size !? – all are designed to be psychologically irresistible. This year, slow down and really think about your purchases. Try to remind retailers that they know what they are doing to you and your soul, and part time, though they will raise the price before you drop it. Oh, and keep in mind that sales items are final sales. Enough was said.

2. Try Out a New Trend

Who says you have to sacrifice or give up things when making a decision? After all, we are not saying the new year, it is new to nothing. The beginning of a new year inevitably tries to bring together all fashion trends. All bloggers and style tunes let you follow on Instagram, which says “I wish I could leave”. So guess? You can do it. Style is mostly about spreading trust and having what you wear. Get out of your comfort zone and have fun (but make sure you stick to your personal style).

If you need an extra push, grab a friend and make a shopping date from it. Sometimes we all need some third-party assurance.

Worried that this will go to your 2018 to save more money? Editor’s tip: Don’t knock on trend-focused pieces (for some reason they’re called trend… so they won’t stick for a long time). Diving into fast fashion will leave you with the regret of a good old-fashioned buyer. In places like Mango, Zara, Madewell, Pixie Market and Topshop, there are trendy pieces at a fraction of the price of your favorite designers.

3. Purge Your Closet

The more clothes you have, the more options you have every morning, right? Technically, yes. However, an overflowing toilet seat may also bring the frighteners “I have nothing to wear today”. A very good thing can ultimately cause you to mix up with your style and what you really like to wear – and let’s not even waste how much $$ here.

If you don’t like your wardrobe and you can change it if you want. This year, try to install a wardrobe that meets your needs at almost every opportunity, without having too many pieces that you rarely wear.

Sometimes falling in love with your wardrobe requires good liquidation. I’m not telling you to vaccinate the “no purchase of any kind” rule (come on … what fun is that?) Set a night out this year and get a page from my book – remember: wine, Sonos, takeaway, trousers (optional) – and dive deep into the intestines of your closet. Take it all out, just keep what you really like, inventory products you haven’t bought yet, and identify what’s worth investing in.

Now, what to do with “refusing”? Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. There are many amazing selling sites and donation sites and shelters that welcome your stuff with open arms, like Poshmark and eBay (and hey, maybe you will find something you like!).

4. Invest in Dual-Purpose Pieces

Whether you work in a corporate environment, an ordinary agency, or your neighborhood coffee shop – I understand, you want your professional style to truly express who you are. One of the biggest mistakes you can make for your wardrobe is to divide your clothes into two islands: work and play. Your office style doesn’t have to be significantly different from your evening or weekend style; Just be smart about shopping and style.

I am not claiming that the entire “less is more” mentality is completely nailed, (anyone who is guilty about many ways to wear a piece on a sales clerk, in reality, you’re just looking for assurance, because you may be making a stupid purchase all the time?) i am trying to be When making a purchase this year, challenge yourself to think about two, maybe three different ways. Try as many boxes as possible (i.e. one night for workplace, Saturday brunch and drinks).

Take a blouse inspired by, for example, pajamas. With only different shoe and trouser options, the upper is easily passed from a day full of meetings to a day full of feet. Or, change your go-to-pant-loafers combination for your top pants and oversized sweaters and you’re ready for the weekend.

Master this and not only will you have a clean and unkempt closet, it will also make dressing much easier in the morning (not to mention it will earn you more kilometers than your clothing purchases!).

5. Revamp Your Collection of “Basics”

A buttery leather jacket that goes with almost anything, a classic ditch, black skinny jeans that fit so perfectly (that makes your butt great), your t-shirt collection, a pair of loafers and oh, your favorite gray crew neck cashmere sweater – we call it “basic”. The basics (lines and light textures are considered completely neutral if you ask me) are neutral parts that blend easily, match and layered and come in functional and comfortable cuts and silhouettes. They are the foundation of a timeless wardrobe, and any trend you take along the way acts as an anchor for the forward track.

One of the ongoing fashion wars is to decipher that you should spend real money against what you should buy cheaply. I suggest you channel your inner French girl and invest in quality foundations – these pieces can wear you in many different ways, take you from one season to another (and maybe year-round), so you might consider investing some extra money.

I tell people to basically remember the “function on fashion” rule about purchasing. When making a purchase, you ask yourself, “How many different ways can I wear this piece?” Try to ask. If you can think of more than one combination, you know that there is no one-shot curiosity sitting in your closet.

The best thing about having such a powerful basic collection is that you can easily add pizazz to your look with simple additions – try playing with layering or add a bold accessory. Take, for example, a white buttoned button, pair it with a buttoned crew neck sweatshirt or wear it with a neck scarf.
